Until now blogging has not been something that has come particularly naturally to me. Despite recognising the value of blogging to my business, the pressure to post a blog has, at times, made me feel very much as if I am back at school and have left it until the last moment to complete my homework (a feeling |
that I was all too familiar with and even now can transport me straight back to the 1980’s, big hair and all, in a heartbeat.
However, as a Learning Lunch with the lovely Pouting in Heels has shown me, not only is blogging something I have come to overthink, but it looks like I may have been choosing to hide behind my company logo. Often too awed to put myself and some of my views and experiences out there.
Most of the past blogs have been “How To” articles; which, although I certainly hope give value, have allowed me to comment and share from the safe haven of anonymity. However, my business is me. My clients work with me, those attending the workshops I run deal with me and at any networking events it is me promoting my business……….so why the reluctance?
Admittedly I am no wordsmith, but that is not the problem; put simply, it would seem to be a fear of putting myself out there. The irony is, I really know my stuff. Ask me a social media focused question and I am happy to chat at length; however, put me in front of a laptop and writers block seems to strike with alarming speed. Suddenly I struggle to find the words, in part worried that readers may not be interested in my thoughts or take on a particular issue. This is an affliction that only seems to strike me in the virtual world and the resulting blogs are hopefully informative, but ultimately steady with no personality visible behind the ever present logo.
Well, it is time to change. There is lots to blog about. The world of social media is constantly changing with tweaks to existing platforms together with new platforms and technology being launched. In addition to this there are great social media successes, but also some very cringe worthy social media fails, all of which are likely to make interesting and hopefully entertaining blogs.
So, thank you Katie Portman, it is indeed time for me to step out from behind the logo and in to the full glare of the spotlight a blog brings and to start sharing some thoughts and experiences, together with the usual mix of hints, tips and how to guides.
Interestingly enough, I am no longer feeling quite so reluctant to blog anymore.
